The Napthine Pairs relays were held on Friday 21st December to celebrate the end of year. This annual tradition began in 1976 and is named in honour of Vin Napthine pictured below.
Vincent Herbert Napthine (1897 – 1976) was a coach at the Lara Swimming Club during the 1970’s. He was a brilliant teacher of correct stroke technique and was also awarded an MBE for his services to swimming (P. Strijder 2013).
In a letter to the Swimming Club Committee in 1975 he writes
“Having spent many years in the swimming world, I say without hesitation that my greatest privilege has been the pleasure I obtained from teaching children and adults. Among these have been both Army and Air Force personnel, but it gave me more pleasure to see Mrs. June Richardson and her class of ladies in the pool at Lara learning to swim. Not only did they learn, but prior to coming to lessons were complete strangers. They became great friends, and applauded one another for their efforts. No public relations officer could do such a fantastic job.”
